THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO THE PERFECT MOUSTACHE

Practical tips to make the most of Movember and wear a mustache with style

Movember offers everyone the chance to try a look that is often snubbed or considered difficult to pull off the right way. That’s why we decided to give you some advice on how to choose the perfect type of mustache for you and provide a few examples to refer to, so you’ll no longer have any excuses for not wearing one.
First of all, to choose which type of mustache suits you, you shouldn't rely solely on pure aesthetics; you should also take your face shape into account. In fact, the right type of mustache can even help you hide overly pronounced facial features or enhance less defined ones.
Here are the three parameters to start basing your choice on:
  1. The weight, or the density and thickness of the mustache. Heavy mustaches, in fact, add volume to the face and are therefore ideal for hiding, for example, a prominent nose.
  2. The direction, how long the horizontal line is and how far it extends from one end of the lip to the other. On a long face, a mustache that extends significantly horizontally, such as a handlebar mustache, is perfect because it contrasts the vertical lines of the face.
  3. The width, or how much space the mustache occupies between the nose and mouth. Wide mustaches make the mouth and nose look wider, while narrow mustaches give the impression of reducing the distance.
Let's now move on to look at 5 types of mustaches:

NATURAL MUSTACHE

To start, let’s begin with a simple type of mustache that is easy to grow and maintain. A natural mustache refers to one left to grow spontaneously from the base of the nose to the corners of the mouth. It is certainly a type of mustache suitable for everyone, simply letting nature take its course, with the first results visible after about a couple of weeks. It is the perfect, clean, and simple mustache, suitable for those who don’t have much time to dedicate to maintenance, yet it remains a look of great class in its simplicity, as demonstrated by Brad Pitt.

CHEVRON MUSTACHE

These are classic, full, and voluminous mustaches that are nonetheless clean and easy to obtain. To be considered a noteworthy chevron mustache, it must: exceed the corners of the mouth in width, be slightly arched downwards forming an inverted 'v', and only partially cover the upper lip; the corners must be trimmed so as not to extend more than 1.5 cm past the sides of the mouth. This is the look made iconic by Freddie Mercury and Tom Selleck.

HANDLEBAR MUSTACHE

These are among the most iconic and eccentric mustaches of all time.
It is a type of mustache that requires attention and care, particularly suitable for those with a long face. The distinctiveness of this mustache is that the tips turn upwards and then curve toward the nose; this curling can be achieved through the use of mustache wax.
Furthermore, the hairs at the corners of the mouth must be shaved, while the length above the lip must be brushed. Since it is a very eccentric look, you don’t often see it on the street, but in recent years it has been gaining popularity in the hipster movement in a more unkempt version.

PENCIL MUSTACHE

These are thin, refined, and elegant mustaches that are simple to achieve but require continuous maintenance with daily shaving and touch-ups. These mustaches sit just above the upper lip, either divided in the middle by following the natural parting or by manually recreating the separation with a razor. As for the length, it can exceed the corners of the mouth, but by no more than 5 mm.
It is a style that has gone down in history and is linked to old Hollywood. That is why Clark Gable comes to mind whenever we hear about this type of mustache.

ENGLISH MUSTACHE

These are rare, elegant, and eye-catching mustaches that fully represent the style of the Anglo-Saxon gentleman. These mustaches are also divided in the center, and the hairs beyond the corners of the mouth are shaved. The distinctive feature of this type of mustache is that the tips are not curled but combed to form straight lines. To prevent drooping and to constantly maintain the shape, the ends should be styled with wax; precisely for this reason, it is a mustache that requires care and dedication.
