2023 beard and mustache trends

HOW TO START THE NEW YEAR IN STYLE: THE BEARD AND MOUSTACHE LOOKS WE WILL SEE MOST OFTEN IN 2023

Barberino’s Master Barber Giuseppe Vincitorio explained the 2023 trends for beards and moustaches. In the first case, regarding beards, more natural styles with fades will continue to be preferred over defined lines. After years of short beards and moustaches due to the struggle with face masks, the time has come to make room for length; therefore, there is plenty of room for the corporate beard and the hipster beard, especially for younger faces. For those who don't like thick beards, do not despair: the stubble beard will continue to be trendy—the 3-day beard that is easy to maintain, provided you don't exceed 3 mm and you groom the edges.

THE IMPORTANCE OF FACE SHAPE

When choosing a look, it is very important to take your face shape into account. Every look, in fact, helps highlight a different facial feature, and just one wrong cut can reduce the harmony between the parts, which is why it must be chosen with care. Knowing how to identify your facial shape is a very important step in understanding how to enhance your face and features by leveraging beard and hair cuts. There are five main shapes: inverted triangle, which has a wide forehead and a narrow or pointed chin; round, without sharp angles and with similar length and width; oval, where the length is greater but the features remain soft; square, which has a more pronounced jawline; and diamond, with prominent cheekbones and jaw. To discover your facial shape, in some cases it is enough to pay attention to your features in front of a mirror; in others, it is more complex and it becomes necessary to use a tailor's tape measure to measure the length of the face (from the hairline to the chin) and the width of the forehead and cheekbones, and then compare the centimetres.

To help men best enhance their features and avoid making mistakes, here are some tips for identifying your facial shape and the beard and hair style most suitable for your face:

INVERTED TRIANGLE (OR HEART) SHAPED FACE

Forehead width > cheekbone width > jaw (if the chin is pointed, the shape is heart-shaped)

  • Hair: the important thing is to add volume to the top of the head while keeping lengths shorter on the sides

  • Beard: hipster beard, halfway between a groomed and an unkempt beard, or a corporate beard for those who prefer a neat appearance

ROUND FACE

Face length = cheekbone width > forehead width = jaw (without sharp angles)
  • Hair: short cut on the sides and more voluminous on top, perhaps with the help of a quiff

  • Beard: ducktail beard, also suitable for oval faces, but you can also opt for an unkempt beard

OVAL FACE

Face length > cheekbone width = forehead width > jaw

  • Hair: classic style with a side part and very short or shaved sides to accentuate the shape

  • Beard: full and well-defined beard, like the ducktail beard, which must be groomed with precision

SQUARE FACE

Face length = cheekbone width = forehead width = pronounced jaw
  • Hair: very short or shaved cuts, but also medium lengths with a side quiff on the forehead

  • Beard: Hollywoodian beard, very similar to the corporate beard but more defined

DIAMOND FACE

Face length > cheekbone width > forehead width > jaw
  • Hair: cuts that add width to the forehead and chin, including fringes and quiffs that fall onto the forehead

  • Beard: french fork beard, which helps soften the shape, or the Van Dyke, which helps convey a strong image

 THREE STYLE TIPS FOR 2023

For 2023, as far as hair is concerned, graduated cuts are expected, following the Anglo-Saxon model, therefore giving the green light to fades. Among the cuts we will see most often, there will undoubtedly be the top fade, with a taper on the nape and sideburns and volume on the top of the head. In particular, among these cuts, much room will be left for the french crop, much appreciated for its convenience since it involves combing the lengths downward to form a sort of "fringe."
Instead, for those who prefer longer hair, the cut that par excellence plays with lengths without abandoning the much-loved fades will continue to be the undisputed protagonist: the mullet.
