HOW TO DRESS LIKE A PEAKY BLINDER

The irresistible style of the Peaky Blinders: here is how to recreate their outfits

Impeccable style is a hallmark of the Shelby Brothers gang, which throughout the unfolding events serves as a mirror of 1920s and 30s fashion, not limiting itself to the emblematic flat cap but dedicating attention to every single element.

To exemplarily replicate their outfits and be officially admitted into the Peaky Blinders gang, here are four essential elements beyond the traditional hat.

First of all: the overcoat.

The overcoat is a fundamental element for a total Peaky Blinders look, and to be suitable it must: have lapels, be very long, and, above all, be heavy enough to withstand the Birmingham cold.
Costume designer Stephanie Collie stated that the choice to use a long coat was linked to the idea of conferring a solemn and menacing air in scenes where the gang members walk side-by-side, but purchasing a nice overcoat can prove to be an excellent choice even without this kind of goal.

Choosing a good-quality coat that fits you well might be expensive, but it is a true investment since it is an item that never goes out of style and makes any kind of outfit more elegant.

Second fundamental element: the suit.

To perfectly mirror a Peaky Blinder's look, you should opt for a three-piece suit with narrow, cropped trousers. Ideally, it would be a bespoke suit; while it is now easy to find nice suits off-the-rack, it is still advisable to use a tailor to ensure the suit fits perfectly. The typical fabrics preferred by the Shelby Brothers are tweed, plaid, grey, brown, and blue.

For a complete look, the waistcoat is indispensable, although it is not widely used nowadays, and to avoid being mistaken for a waiter, we recommend avoiding colors like blue and black.

Third element of the look: the shirt.

An essential element not to be considered trivial in composing the look is the shirt. The characteristic of all shirts worn by Thomas Shelby is the penny collar; with a shorter collar than a traditional one but more rounded at the neck, the Penny collar is the compromise between a traditional collar and a mandarin collar.

To be exactly like Tommy, choose a nice white one and button the shirt all the way up, while for a more casual look, a dark flannel shirt worn more unbuttoned is perfect.

Last but not least: the boots.

An essential element to complete the look is a nice pair of elegant dark brown or black leather boots. The ideal boot reaches the ankle, is lace-up, and pairs perfectly with trousers featuring a very short turn-up that leaves the boot on display—a perfect look for going to the horse races or even for a stroll downtown. They might feel uncomfortable at first, but they are an indispensable element for a total Peaky Blinders look.

Finally, there is no need to specify that the flat cap is the icing on the cake to complete a Shelby Brothers-style look; choose the color you prefer, and you will have finally achieved the perfect look!
