HOW TO APPLY MEN'S COLOGNE

A quick lesson on men's fragrances: What they are, how they are composed, and how to apply men's perfume to make it last longer.

how to apply men's perfume

Perfume is an indispensable accessory and, even though it is often forgotten, it is one of the best ways we have to leave a lasting impression on others.

Perfume is like a second skin and reveals much about who we are: one only needs to think of the original meaning of the word in Latin: “profumo” comes from the term “per fumum”, which literally means “through smoke”; indeed, at their very origin, perfumes and essential oils were used as a means of communication to connect with gods and ancestors. The etymology of the word gives an idea of the effect that perfume produces: it is precisely through scents that we perceive different sensations.

We therefore decided to write an article to help you discover how to apply men's perfume and what the best tricks are to make it last longer, while also taking advantage of the launch of the new Barberino’s fragrances inspired by Sicily!

THE LIFE CYCLE OF PERFUMES

In technical jargon, it is said that perfume composition is based on an olfactory pyramid, an evaporating pyramid divided into three parts, starting from the tip (the first scent you smell) down to the base (the last). Each of the three sections contains individual fragrances that, when linked together, form the perfume we smell. The three distinct notes are:

  • top notes: the initial scent. Top notes can last anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours.
  • heart notes: highlight the main element of the fragrance; they develop after the top note fades and can last 3–5 hours.
  • base notes: these are the last to develop and are what determine the longevity of the fragrance on the skin; they tend to last from 5 to 10 hours.

From the moment of application, the perfume will evolve; in fact, a good way to evaluate a fragrance is to pay attention to how it evolves throughout the day.

HOW TO APPLY MEN'S PERFUME

It is often erroneously believed that the perfume we have chosen is not intense enough because we do not smell it lingering on our skin throughout the day; however, this is often simply due to incorrect application.
In fact, it is essential to know the correct points to spray the fragrance, because depending on body temperature, sun exposure, and other elements, there are parts of the body that are better suited than others to ensure our perfume remains intense for as long as possible.

So, how do you apply men's perfume? Let's start with the fundamental rules:

  1. How should you spray men's perfume? The atomizer should be held at a distance of about 20 cm from the body. In general, it is best never to spray it too close. Furthermore, it is good practice not to rub your wrists together after applying perfume: the heat caused by friction may alter the fragrance, while the goal is to have the perfume blend slowly with our skin and its natural oils; this allows the fragrance to change slightly from person to person, making the perfume personal and unique; this is also one of the secrets to making your perfume last as long as possible!
  2. Anyone wanting to learn how to spray men's perfume should know that it should be applied to the warm parts of the body, the "pulse points" - where you can feel your heartbeat - because as the skin warms up, it will enhance the olfactory notes. The neck area is known by everyone as one of the best, but it is not the only one! In fact, one must keep in mind that it is one of the areas most exposed to the sun, so it is actually more advisable to spray the perfume behind the ears and on the nape of the neck. The wrists are also important, while the other two areas recommended for a man are the chest and the elbows, as well as the crease of the arm or the knees, which remain exposed in summer. This will allow you to leave a wonderful trail of perfume as you move!
  3. A tip for achieving an even more sophisticated effect is to spray the perfume on clothing and fabrics. Proceed with caution, however: while it is true that perfume lasts longer on fabric, it is also true that if the fragrance contains dye, it could ruin your clothes.

This practice has ancient origins: back in the day, a place where men would spray perfume was on their pocket square.

Finally, among the tips regarding men's perfume and how to apply it, we emphasize that it is always preferable to spray the fragrance on clean skin, ideally after a shower, so that the perfume adheres well to the epidermis.

Now that you know how to apply men's perfume and know the secrets of fragrances and how to use them to their best advantage, all that’s left is to choose the one that seems most suitable for you!
Also, take advantage of the launch of the Barberino's fragrances: Naxos is the new arrival, Agrigentum and Aetna may be familiar to you, but they have been slightly revisited; we suggest you try them out.
