GUIDELINES FOR DEFINING AND TRIMMING YOUR NECK BEARD
Regardless of the beard style you sport, there is one fundamental area you must learn to manage: the neck. The neck is a critical spot, and it is highly discouraged to let your beard grow without shaping it, as the end result would be a scruffy appearance. Here are the answers to frequently asked questions like “how do I find the right neckline for my beard?”.
Let’s proceed step by step.
1. HOW TO LOCATE THE NECKLINE
The imaginary line to follow for trimming your neck beard is not always fixed; for example, a chinstrap beard must follow specific rules. However, if you are not wearing a particular beard style, there is a general rule you can use to identify the line to follow. It is an invisible line that runs from one earlobe to the other, passing above the Adam’s apple. Here is the trick to finding it: stand in front of the mirror, tilt your head back, and place two fingers above your Adam’s apple; that is where this invisible line runs, and you should trim any hair below it.
2. WHAT SHAPE TO GIVE YOUR BEARD
Once you have identified this imaginary line, it is time to proceed with the actual shave. As we have explained in other articles, it is advisable to shave right after a hot shower so that the skin is softer, the pores are dilated, and the skin is less prone to irritation. Generally, there are two shapes you can choose from: a squarer shape if you have a round face, and a rounder shape if you have a squarer face.

Start shaving from the middle and work your way towards the ear, paying attention to the jawline. Once you reach the ear, go back to the middle and proceed toward the other ear, always keeping an eye on how you are shaping your beard. If you make a mistake in defining the line, don’t worry; let the hair grow and try again in a few days. Even after just a couple of days, the hair might be long enough to try again.
To maintain the result, it will be enough to clean up your neck with a beard trimmer about once every two days.
3. WHICH TOOLS AND PRODUCTS TO USE
Trimming your neck beard is precision work that should be performed using the right tools and products. To start defining the neckline, a beard trimmer is sufficient, while for shaving the hair completely and cleaning the neck, it is better to use a razor. As with any shaving topic, it is important to remember that the result also depends on the products used before and after. Before shaving, it is always necessary to apply either shaving foam or shaving cream, and—something to always keep in mind—shaving always ends with the application of an aftershave balm.
